Season of Lent
Wednesday, February 17, 2010, marks the beginning of the liturgical season of Lent. Lent is the period of six weeks, from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. The word comes from the old English and refers to the lengthening of the days as we approach the spring solstice. In church tradition it is an opportunity for Christians to repent; to turn in a new direction from the parts of our lives which are inhibiting a full relationship with God, and seek spiritual renewal. Use our Lenten Devotional as a way to focus on our Lenten theme: Walking with Prayer.
The mid day service has become a tradition for Ash Wednesday providing forty minutes of quiet during which people may prepare to enter this season of reflection and renewal. Organist Matthew Weaver will provide music for meditation, and meditation aids will be provided. Worshipers may come forward to receive communion by intinction at any time during the half hour of service. The distribution of Ashes will be available for those who wish to receive them. The ashes are an outward sign of our inner desire to repent (change) and renew our lives. The Healing Station will also be available for those who wish to receive prayers for healing.
The Ash Wednesday evening service at 6:00 p.m. has become a family
tradition as we gather around the table to share a simple meal, reflect on the meaning of Ash Wednesday, receive Communion, and have the option of receiving ashes as a sign of our desire to repent (change) and renew our lives.
Reservations are suggested - dinner is $5/individual or $15/family: Register Now!
The services will focus on prayer as part of our overall Lenten theme of Prayers from the Cross. The services will be held in the Sanctuary from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., and in the Chapel from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the noon service, for those on their lunch hour, there will be a sandwich luncheon available immediately following the service.
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be
observed at each of the services which will
include special music provided by soloists
and instrumentalists from our congregation
and
accompaniment by our Organist/
Accompanist, Matthew Weaver. There will
be scripture shared and interpreted by a
contemporary illustration focusing on our
theme of prayer. The services will last only
˝ hour to allow those who need to get on
with their daytime or evening commitments a
chance to honor a Lenten Discipline.
If you work downtown, encourage your office friends to join you. If you are driving downtown, bring a friend.
Holy Week Services
We celebrate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem
with the traditional greeting “Hosanna to the Son of David!” At 11:00 a.m. our Children
process with Palms. The Handbell Choir will be featured at the 8:30 and the 11:00
a.m. services. At all three services we will continue our series on Prayers from the
Cross focusing on the words of Jesus, “It is finished.”
,
In the
style we have developed for our mid week services during Lent. this noon time
service is for those who feel uncomfortable driving at night and for those who work
downtown who will not be able to make the evening service. In addition to
communion, the Healing Prayer station will also be available.
Communion will be observed in the Sanctuary at a family-friendly service. Our
children have been learning about the Lord’s Supper, the last meal that Jesus
shared with his disciples before his death, and they will lead us in our
observance by introducing us to what they have learned. This service will be
family oriented and include elements of worship from all of our worship styles:
informal, contemporary and traditional.
hosted by the Downtown Ministerium will be held at St James Episcopal Church at Duke and Orange Streets. The Service divided into half hour time segments so that people may come and go as their schedule permits. The service consists of Hymns, Special music, Meditations, and Prayers focusing on the Passion of Jesus. Pastors from the Downtown Ministerium will be preaching, including Pastor Riggs.
in the Sanctuary continues at a new time this
year to be family-friendly. This Service of Gathering Darkness takes us deeper into
the Passion of Jesus and prepares us for Easter. Powerful in the dramatic retelling of
experience of Jesus’ death, we leave a darkened Sanctuary to return on Easter
morning.
Celebrate the Resurrection!
Identical Festival Services of worship to celebrate the
resurrection will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Special music will be provided
by a Brass Ensemble and the Chancel Choir. The Hallelujah Chorus and the Widor
Toccata will close each service. Dr. Riggs will be preaching at these two services and
will delivering his final sermon in the series “Prayers from the Cross.” The sermon is
entitled “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit—Prayers of trusting God with the
outcome.”
A contemporary celebration of Easter led by our worship team and including the Easter message by Pastor Hackett focusing on the same text as our other services, “Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit— Prayers of trusting God with the outcome.”
will be provided for little ones throughout the morning and special Easter Sunday activities will be offered to children of all ages during each worship service following the Moment with the Children.
